Day 11: Golden Monkey Trek & Lake Kivu Excursion (Musane and Rubavu, Rwanda)

Friday, May 22nd, 2026

Today began very early as we departed the hotel around 3-3:30am for our journey to Volcanoes National Park, located in Musanze, Rwanda, approximately two and a half hours northwest of Kigali. Although it was an early start, the drive was well worth it. As the sun began to rise, we were able to take in the breathtaking scenery. Watching the community begin their day and seeing the country’s natural beauty unfold around us was an experience in itself.

Upon arriving at Volcanoes National Park, we began our Golden Monkey Trek. Before reaching the monkeys, we completed a hike of approximately one hour through fields. The trek allowed us to experience the park’s rich ecosystem and appreciate the conservation efforts that protect wildlife and natural environment. One of the most striking views was Mount Sabyinyo, seeing the volcano emerge through the mist added to the beauty of the experience.

Once we reached the golden monkeys, were were greeted by what seemed like hundreds of them moving throughout the trees and vegetation. The experience both exciting and peaceful. We were able to sit quietly alongside the monkeys and observe their behavior in their natural habitat. They were playful, energetic, and curious, marking a memorable wildlife encounter. Seeing these beautiful animals unclose was a unique experienced one of the highlights of the trip.

After completing the trek, we departed Musanze and traveled to Lake Kivu, where we checked into our hotel overlooking the lake. The views were absolutely stunning. Lake Kivu’s calm waters, surrounding mountains, and peaceful atmosphere provided the perfect setting to unwind after an active morning. We spent the remainder of the evening relaxing, enjoying the scenary, and reflecting on the day’s adventure.

The transition from the excitement of the Golden Monkey trek to the tranquility of Lake Kivu created a perfect balance of adventure and rest. As the day came to an end, we prepared for the next day’s visit to a local coffee washing station, looking forward to learning more about one of Rwanda’s most important industries.

Today’s experience reminded me of the importance of slowing down and appreciating the beauty that exists both in nature and everyday life. From observing the golden monkeys in their natural environment to watching the daily routines of people living in the villages along our journey, I was reminded that meaningful experiences often come from simply being present and observant. Rwanda continues to impress me with its commitment to conservation, its breathtaking landscapes, and the warmth of its people.

As a leader, this experience reinforced the importance of intentionally creating time to disconnect from the demands of work and daily responsibilities. Leadership often requires constant decision-making, problem-solving, and serving others, which can be mentally and emotionally taxing over time. Taking moments to slow down, reflect, and immerse ourselves in nature provides an opportunity to recharge and regain perspective. Experiences like today’s hlep prevent burnout by allowing us to step away from the pressures of our professional roles and focus on our overall well-being.

The peacefulness of the forest, the simplicity of observing wildlife in its natural habitat, and serenity of Lake Kivu served as reminders of the value of mindfulness. Being fully present in the moment allowed me to appreciate the experience without distraction and to reflect on the many blessings surrounding me. I believe effective leadership is not only about achieving goals and driving results but also about maintaining the personal balance necessary to sustain those efforts over time. Today was a powerful reminder that rest, reflection, and renewal are essential components of strong and sustainable leadership.
