Day 10: Celebrating Success and the Power of Empowerment

Today was graduation day, and it was one of the most beautiful and emotional experiences.
After a week of learning, collaboration,m and growth, we gathered to celebrate the accomplishments of all the participants who completed their respective programs. The graduation ceremony included three groups, the project management participants, who worked alongside the Mercer University graduate students; the marketing participants, who were taught by the Mercer undergraduate students; and the counseling participants, who received support and instruction from Mercer counseling students. Collectively, more than one hundred participants took part in the programs throughout the week, making today’s celebration a significant milestone for everyone involved.
What made the ceremony especially meaningful was learning more about the individual journeys of many of the participants. For some, this was the first certification they had ever received. Others had not completed primary school, secondary school, or university-level education. Receiving a certificate may seem like a small accomplishment to some, but for many of these individuals, it represented perserverance, personal growth, and a belief that new opportunities are possible.
The celebration itself was unlike anything I have experienced before. There was singing, dancing, laughter, and heartfelt expressions of gratitude. The joy in the room was contagious. As participants walked across the stage to receive their certificates, their pride and excitment were visible in every smile, every embrace, and every celebration. Many of us found ourselves overwhelmed with emotion. There were tears of joy, tears of gratitude, and tears that reflected the deep connections that had been built throughout the week.
One of the things I have come to appreciate most about Rwanda is the culture of gratitude and community. The participants were genuinely thankful for the opportunity to learn, and their enthusiasm reminded me never to take education and professional development for granted. Their excitement transformed what could have been a simple certificate ceremony into a powerful celebration of hope, growth, and possibility.
From a leadership perspective, today reinforced that there is something incredibly fulfilling about investing your time, knowledge, and energy into others and ten having the privilege of witnessing their success. Today’s celebration was a reminder that leadership is not about being the person on the stage receiving recognition; often, it is about standing beside the stage, cheering as someone else reaches a milestone they once thought was out of reach.
As I reflect on the day, I feel immense gratitude for the opportunity to have been part of this experience. Serving as co-leader and instructor for the project management program allowed me to contribute in a meaningful way, but I leave today’s ceremony feeling that I received just as much as I gave. The resilience, joy, gratitude, and determination demonstrated by the participants have left a lasting impression on me. Today was more than a graduation ceremony, it was a celebration of empowerment, possibility, and the transformative impact that education and leadership can have on people’s lives.
